io26 WDM channel routing configuration to be used like monitor switch

Hi, I'm a happy user of io26 for some few years. However recently upgraded to 64bit PC with io26 as my only sound device, as per advice (internal sound card disabled). I now, for first time, want to make use of additional (3 of 4) available output channes (io bus 1&2 for active monitors, io 3&4 for hi fi speakers and io 5&6 for small desktop speakers). I expected that, when playing media player, sound files etc I would be able to decide whichever output channel speakers to listen through by simply switching them on/off?

But the "Device Configuration"/"WDM"/"set WDM channel maps" forces me to map only one WDM input pair to only one io 26 Bus output pair. I want to be able to map 1 WDM pair to all output pairs? Instead, each time, I have to remap WDM to hear music through computer speakers (output 5&6), and then remap back to output 1&2 to revert, for example.

Hugely appreciate if somebody can let me know if this is possible, and/or if there is a clear guide as to WDM configuration guide for io26. The reference manual stops short?

Many thanks
John

  • Hello, there is no duplication feature through the HDM. So if the program is not sending its stereo mix to the particular hardware feed, you will not hear it. The HDM will help you with Input monitoring how you wish, not feeds from the software. If you wish to have monitor selection options at all times, even when using the WDM mode, you will want a monitor/source switch. This hardware is actually rerouting the signal when you press the switches.

  • Thanks for response J, but sorry, I'm still confused. I understand that the HDM allows me to route any combination of input channels to any of the 4 output channel pairs... Nothing to do with software (input) feeds...?

Selecting "Device Configuration" in the HDM opens up the Global Settings window, from where WDM channel maps is accessed. In there am I correct that WDM channels (1 to 8) refer to the software (i.e. windows media player... computer)? WDM 1 & 2 is where all software sound is coming from... mapped to Deice (io26) outputs? That is, no normal windows sounds/or media is being delivered through WDM 3 to 8? I don't know how to map software stereo to WDM 3&4 and WDM 5&6 etc?

What is monitor/source switch? A separate piece of Alesis (or other) hardware? Or something I can configure within windows 7 or within io26?

    Your patience is appreciated!

  • Hi J, I have uploaded some screen shots in one diagram, with commentary as I understand it... I hope this makes sense?
The io26 manual does not explain the WDM mappings screen or how computer stereo output maps to WDM input channels... ??

    many thanks, John

  • Ok thanks J, I think I understand.

I can't see, or map, to separate outputs within windows 7 sounds or mixer... windows 7 just sees Alesis as a single stereo output Bus.

I can, via io26 WDM mapping, route software stereo output to one of the 4 available io26 output pairs. But only one at a time. To switch around I need to change channel mappings manually, which is laborious.

It would be a nice feature if such a switch could be part of the io26 HDM/hardware... OR at least an selection on the main HDM software panel... hence a feature request....

The only other way would be to put some sort of hardware switch/distributor box between the io26 hardware (first output 1 & 2 pair) and different speaker pairs? Is there such a thing that you would recommend?... stereo input to 4 (say) switchable outputs?

    Many thanks

  • Thanks J for helping me understand all of this. You've been great. I know what to do now. Maybe a feature update for io26 would be nice in not too distant future.

  • Hi There
I'm also a happy user of the io26, having a similar but different issue with monitoring and there doesn't seem to be a wealth of information on the matter.

I've just started using quadro in conjunction with cubase 5, everything is mapped fine and no problem with speaker channels etc. HOWEVER, the 'main level' knob on the io26 only seems to affect the first stereo output, and not also the outputs from the other busses, hence when turning up or down the monitoring level, the mix changes - and I also cannot be sure if the relative levels are correct in the first place.

Is this something that either of you have come across?

    - The io26 manual seems to refer to turning off WDM if there are issues with routing, but I can't find that option anywhere in either the alesis software or windows 7 control panel.

** I've since 'fixed' with only sending quad out of inputs 3 onwards which results in equal level being sent to each speaker however this means controlling the volume with the speakers themselves - having to set them at EXTREMELY low level to account for high output volume, not sure if this is affecting the efficiency of the speaker drivers..

Anyway, if there's something easy I've missed then please get back to me, but I'm perfectly ready to accept that it's an artefact that can't be resolved - it's working well enough, but pretty annoying..

    • Sorry - not being clear enough. I've set up a quad speaker arrangement, so psuedo-surround..

My real question is, is there an easy way to set up the master volume knob on the alesis io26 to control the levels for all busses out rather than just the main stereo pair i.e. bus 1+2? At the moment, busses 3 through 8 are just chucking out line level audio regardless of anything I can find to change this within any DAW or in the WDM mapping, or in windows sound preferences.

Thanks for being so quick getting back!
    • There is no internal selections in the I/O software for linking for extra monitors to the hardware's master knob. If you want to do more with monitors, you may need a monitor switch/distributor.

I can put in a feature request for you but Im no sure we have any plans to make new implementation on the HDM as the io14/26 line is discontinued.

  • Hi all I'm ina similar situation, have been using iO26 for a few years flawlessly and love it, so much I have a spare which would like to daisy chain??? if anyone can helpme on that as well, however 2 nights ago it suddenly stopped... giving a window saying" all channels unmapped"

all signels can be seen, all channels work, nothing was tamptered with, can play a external signal through the computer back through firewire and be heard, just won't take signal into the DAW and won't play back tracks from the DAW even though I can see them,

    can anyone help.....?
