Apple has acknowledged that the symptom of hiss and/or distortion in the Audio input is an iOS 5 issue, and that it is not limited to or caused by the Alesis iO DOCK. It appears that Apple has fixed this issue in the latest iOS update. As of 02/12/2012, this update is in beta and is not yet available to the public. However, testing of this upcoming release does indicate that Apple has resolved the issue.
-
Heres an update on progress, we suspect there will be one last beta spin then a public release of iOS 5.1 which is confirmed to resolve the issue.
-
We are aware of some iO Dock performance issues with audio inputs on certain apps on iPad 2s running iOS 5. We certainly apologize for this unfortunate situation. Apple is actively working on this issue and plans to issue a fix in an upcoming iOS release.

Hello, just a quick update guys on the situation.
Several of the posters in this topic have now stated with all the updates the issue is gone for them. However we realize others still have an issue.
We have been working very closely with Apple to continue to work on this issue, while iOS5.0.1 helps many users they understand some users still have an issues and are working to repair this issue. Their engineering department are working around the clock. Apple has confirmed there is an issue and they are resolving it.
We strongly recommend ensuring you have:
1) The latest iO dock firmware
2) iOS 5.0.1
3) The latest garage band app.
With this combination many users have had success.
If you still have an issue we are sorry for the inconvenience. We are working very hard to encourage and help apple with this issue.
Tip: We have been advised that if you close the garage-band application after first run (After turning on your device) then re-open this will help resolve the issue. -
- Important-
iOS5.0.1 has been released with OS performance enhancements
Garageband has been updated as have other apps.
We have published 1.7 firmware on our website.
Please ensure you have all of these updated for optimal performance.
We will monitor feedback and work closely with Apple. -

1The issue with the Alesis iO Dock, GarageBand (and other apps), and iOS5 is related to changes in iOS5 to the way audio is handled on the 30 Pin connector.
We have been able to recreate this same issue with other 30 Pin devices including Apples own Camera Connection Kit.
We will continue to look into this and try to develop a work around. Several app developers have had success with this. Since this issues is coming from the iPad itself through the 30 Pin connector, there is little we can do at this time. I will keep everyone updated as things progress.

In my part, after the update, the dock is working as it should, I can use my synth as a controller for the Garageband app, recorded using my dynamic mic and tried also my condenser with it.. didn't experience any static noises/loud hiss like before. With the outputs, they're all working fine.. volume wise.. it's clear and loud enough.

it's not only the iDock that had the white-noise-at-full-volume-at-any-output-level problem.
I got it with the ios apps: "Camera", "iMovie", and maybe some others...my ears were ringing and dulled too much by that point to keep track.
So, Apple had better check it out before they update ios again!
Also the 3rd party vendors have a responsibility to keep ahead of these things Especially when it comes to the health of the clients!
The fact that distributors were still selling it well after the problem started without any warnings (as mine did to me) is also quite disturbing.
It's all also a lesson that unregulated businesses will try to get away with nearly anything!
I'm ready but too spooked to try my iDock again! Should I? -

Hi All on this topic.
I know we are all very P!$$ed off at this situation.
But it would be good to get an indication of who is not happy with how the iODock is working on ios 5.1? I know im not happy with that was supposed to be a fix.
We gotta band together and be a little more clear on what our problems are.
I believe 5.1 has done 80% of fixing the problem but when I was using Apogee Jam tests last night I did get the good old High Pitch noise when I removes the Apple connection before the headphone Jack. So watch out for this.
I dont think reording quality is a clear as it once was on ios 4.3.3
What I am going to do as a test. My mate has a Ipad with ios 4.3.3
I am going to set up in garage band a few amp tests identical on each ipad and use my IO Dock to see is My Ipad on 5.1 gets the same quality of recording as the 4.3.3 ipad.
This will give us a very clear indication of whats happening and if 1) its the same and if not 2) what we need to get back to (If possible)
If not possible I think allesis have to push apple to somehow ok Us users to move back to 4.3.3 (Cant see that happening)
If this cant be done I mean the AmpDock has got to be having the same problems right? And if the amp dock is not I gotta ask the question why.
We all have to use this to get info, not to say how Bad alesis is, that comes after if it has to be said.
All we need it Alesis to be a little more clear and helpful on what to do. We need instruction. You say you have your ones working 100% I want to mirror this. I have no option to return and I purchased the Ipad for the one purpose of recording with the Io Dock.
Sbangs & Dave we do know your in a rock and hard place right now and its fantastic to see your replys over the last 24H, lets us know that you are trying (Please don’t stop again) Bottom line if, as much as everyone is angry we do need you.
I will run my tests on the 4.3.3 Ipad and the 5.1 ipad and put a video out on you tube.
Then we can really start getting this happening.
My last thought.... IOS 5 is made with Ipad 3 in mind right..... Will the Io Dock work Better with Ipad 3? Has allesis been able to test this? Is the Amp Dock Developed for Ipad 3. I would really like to see some questions answered and am very happy to help out in getting to a solution.
Bottom line is more info from everyone less hacking on each other as its not going to help and its clogging up me in box, lol...... I do believe in the iO Dock. As it once was awesome from what I can remember "Back in the day of good old iOS 4"
Lets get this solved as taking way too long.
THanks all...... I know a novel right..... -

I just updated to ios 5.1. Using GarageBand guitar amps seemed fine until I went away for five minutes and the iPad went to sleep. Upon returning and swiping back to GarageBand, I encountered hiss/distortion. Shutdown GarageBand and re-opened and the problem was gone. Just so you know that there seems to be continued problems although not at all like before. Advice?
