I have a new IO dock (adaptor included) and have a problem with the MIDI input. The keys stick (regardless of program) randomly when playing on a midi board. I have used a Roland G8 as a controller and a Alesis Q49.
I found that other people have had this problem or a similar one and describe it in detail at the following forum: http://forums.blipinteractive.co.uk/n...

1Hi Guys,
Please can you make sure you are running iOS 5.1 and the latest versions of your apps there have been some big changes in the OS.
-
Hello, which iPad gen are you using and which OS?
-
-
iPad 2, iOS 4.3.5. Seeing the same loss of messages reported by the original poster. I hope your engineers can fix this soon! (The forum cited above has a dozen or so other reports of this problem, too.)
-
-
Yup.. iPad 2; 4.3.5. Had the same problem before the update. Is there a way to update the firmware of the midi receptor itself?
I also have a random key 2-3 octaves higher then what I am playing come on... Mind you it is rare, but obnoxious in the studio... Espcially since the only way to stop it is to exit the program.. -
-
I have also observed occasional distortion on my guitars when plugged into the dock. If I turn the iPad off, though, that goes away. Other forums mention midi corruption, too. I don't know if all of these are related.
-
-
-
-
I have not treks using a guitar with the device yet.. I typically line in to my Fantom G8, but I'll try it when I get home...
-
-
Getting the same problem with ALL of the music apps (Garageband, lots of different synths). Very frustrating because apart from this problem it seems to be a quality bit of kit. Hoping for an upgrade or it's going to have to go back...

1Hello sorry for the delay we have been taken offline and had no power in our HQ until today.
I am checking with the engineers for you and will report back asap-
No problem! Thnk you for looking into the issue. I will fully recommend your product to every i-inclined musician I know once this is all figured out!
-
-
Glad to hear you're back online. I agree with Adam -- I'm glad you're looking into this, and am generally quite happy with the device aside from this problem. I do have a few other quibbles, but I'll open separate topics for those.

Thanks - that seems to have cured the problem :) Bit hard on pc users tho :(

We are working hard to provide a new updater for PC users you can also use a 3rd party updater.
-
-
-
-
Hi,
Not sure what you mean by updater - is it just a question of sending some sysex to the IO dock midi port or something more complicated? I'm guessing the latter..
P -
-
I'm following up on the comment by Alesis "We are working hard to provide a new updater for PC users you can also use a 3rd party updater. '
-
-
Is the firmware update file a self-contained stream of midi commands that can be played back to the device via a suitable player? Or does it consist of information that needs to be wrapped in midi commands by a more intelligent update program?
-
-
I looked at the file; it appears to have header info (it starts with the text "AkaiUpdateFile", for example) and other non-midi data. So, it doesn't appear that I can use a third-party midi tool such as MIDI-OX (http://www.midiox.com/) to send the file without first doing some editing. What would I need to do to make this work?
-
-
Does anyone from Alesis read this forum? It would nice to have some explanation as to what "use a 3rd party updater" actually entails... I have several 3rd party updaters for various bits of kit but really need a response with guidelines as to how to proceed. The IO dock has just gone back in it's box and is looking more and more like an error of judgement...
-
-
-
-
-

Andrew, you are correct. There is header file that puts the iO Dock into programming mode.
Midi-OX does not appear to work properly. You need to send the SysEx file in two parts.
We are actively testing and working on the PC version and should have it out shortly.
Thanks everyone.- view 1 more comment

It would be the same update on the dock either way. The updater program is just the way of downloading it to the dock.
-

Yes it's working fine. I done the update from a Mac and had a quick check from various synth apps and it's working with no sticking notes. As Dr. Frankenstein said "it's alive!".
Now the io doc it's a very useful piece in my studio. Nice work Alesis team!
Just some questions :
1. Has anyone used the Akai Synthstation app? Some sounds stick (like the ADSR release is in high value, although I have put it to 0). It's not working propertly with a Midi keyboard connected to io doc.
2. The video output is just for seeing iPad videos to screen? Nothing else? Eg. The apps running etc?
3. What's the use of Midi USB port? It should also have the other USB femmale jack for connecting USB keyboards!
Can anyone help, please? -

The folks over on the blipinteractive thread cited at the top of this thread say that the firmware update appears to work.
I will probably wait for the official release of a PC updater, just because I'm a bit short on time at the moment. However, I would like to see a midi reference for this gadget that would tell me what SysEx commands it supports so that I can play around with it in the future. -
-
The new PC updater is available. But I cant get it to work. tried it on 2 different PC's XP and Win7. I noticed that the IO dock is not recognized as a midi device (unknown device) has anyone got the PC version working ?

I tried connecting via midi cables to my SoundBlaster card. No luck. As with the USB connection, the downloader asked if I was sure the IO Dock was connected; when I said yes, it went through the motions of sending the firmware. Now, my iPad doesn't see the IO Dock (even to charge); no dock audio devices appear in the instrument panel. I know the IO Dock is powered up, though, because local monitor works when I turn on the power.

Success!

I was able to update my firmware with the PC updater on WinXP-SP3 by disabling my sound card (which has MIDI devices). This allowed the updater to talk to the iO Dock, even though the dock connects as a generic "USB Audio Device" rather than as an "Alesis iO Dock" (which seems to be what the updater is looking for). To be honest, this is what the on-screen error messages suggest, so this amounts to simply following directions;-)
The first clue that this effort had been successful was that the updater didn't report success, unlike in previous attempts; instead, it reported that the iO Dock hadn't acknowledged the upgrade. When I cycled power to the IO Dock, the iPad recognized it. In subsequent testing, I was unable to make a key "stick on". (I was able to change the video output setting via the updater, too.)
Oddly, when the iO Dock was first connected to my XP system, it identified itself as an "Alesis iO Dock"; however, the only driver it could find was the Generic USB Audio driver, and once that was loaded, the system no longer knew the device as an iO Dock. I don't suppose there is an iO Dock specific XP driver coming?-
Wouldn't hold your breath lol

Andrew, We're glad you were able to update your firmware! Thank you reporting how you were able to connect with the iO Dock. We will make a note in our instructions file to let others know.

I finally got the firmware to update on my windows PC. But it caused more problems than it solved. The updater reported that the IO dock is installed wrong and changed around the drivers then it did the update.
After the update My ipad 2 gave me an error that the usb device is not supported when i slot it into the IO dock. We also tried inserting a friends IPAD 1 it did not give the same error. Since he is an IPAD dev and his IPAD 1 is running the IOS 5 beta we upgraded mine from 4.3.3 to the newest IOS beta. But it still did not fix the problem that the IO dock is a unsupported USB device. If i check the Settings I can see the IO dock with the new firmware version listed. But If i start FL Mobile its not recognized.
Before the IO dock update FL mobile recognized it as a midi device.
I opened a ticket with alesis if they can send me the 1.0.0 firmware or post it on the website. I will post a update if i get a solution from alesis.- view 4 more comments

well it looks like IOS 5 is due to be released within the next 8 days. Before i upgraded we tested the Dock with a ipad 1 wifi 16 gig that already had the latest beta on it and it worked. the 1.0.0 FW also worked with my ipad i just wanted to upgrade so that i dont run into the problems the others had above when im in the studio. I guess they changed something in the FW thats causing it to fail now. I dont understand why they wont give me the old FW so that i can test it for them. i cant even use it as a charging station since it beebs every few minuets with the error reminding me that its not working.

Yep, Oct 12 is the date. Gold images were released in advance, so that developers can test before the OS drops on their customers' iPads. My plans have not changed...

Gerhard,
There is one thing you can try that might work.
1. Turn your iPad fully "off" by holding the power button
2. Turn your iO Dock "off" with the power switch
3. Insert the iPad fully into the iO Dock. Make sure it is fully seated.
4. Turn the iO Dock "on" with the power switch.
If the iPad is properly connected to the iO Dock, this should cause the iPad to turn on. After the iPad boots up, check if the battery shows as charging. If it does, you should be fully connected and working.
For some reason you might have to do this once or twice and then the iPad will recognize the iO Dock and start working properly.
Please report back it this works. -

Hi David
I actually tried that already but just to be sure i did it again, 5 times in a row and there is still no change. The exact error message is "Cannot use device The connected USB device is not supported." Thats the same message I get if i connect something like a USB stick that needs to much power.
I also see the Alesis info in the settings with FW version. But midi and audio is not working. Is there any way to get the 1.00 FW ? That one worked. Was the new FW tested with a 64 gig IPAD 2 ?- view 8 more comments

I sent the mail and yep i always do the RED off Slider. then watch the spinning ||||| in the center , watch it boot up with the Apple logo, then get a beep and the message that the Sim is locked and that the USB device is not supported.
-
-
her is a quick update. I installed the 1.0.0 FW but it did not help so i brought back the dock to the store and got a new one with the 1.0.0 FW and that one is now working with my dock if i do a reboot while it is inserted.

The iODoc is working with iOS 5 connected with the Midi Cables.
No sticking notes with all app synths except the Moog!
When I connected it to PC with USB Midi the cubase see it as input and output but the doc can't control vst synths and the mother keyboard could not play the doc apps!
I'll keep it connect it with the midi cables and everything is perfect. -

ipad2 ios5 ...fagerstrom midi technochanter ....loads sticky keys on all apps plus no notes off!
If I run it through an Alesis nanosynth first and use the midi through into dock....bingo works fine !?! -
