Rimshot signal not received on DM6

Hello,

I purchased a DM6 for my special needs daughter that is musically gifted. She loves the set, but the rim of the snare pad does not register when hitting the rim. The middle of the snare works fine, and lights up on the indicator. The rim does not. When something electronically does not work, it really upsets her. Any troubleshooting ideas, or do I likely have a defective snare pad?

Thanks,

J

  • Hello,

Thanks for posting. I'd like to help! On the DM6, you can adjust the volume of individual pads relative to each other. To make the snare louder, you can turn all the other drums down a little bit. Experiment until you find a mix that suits you.

Adjusting the volume of individual pads on the DM6
    1. Press Voice.
    2. Then press Volume.
    3. Strike the pad you would like to adjust.
    4. Then use the + and - buttons to adjust the volume of the individual pad.
    5. To adjust another pad, strike that pad, and repeat step 4 above.

Try this out and let me know how it goes.

  • I am having the same issue. But the above steps did not resolve it. I emailed support but they said that the DM6 burst kit does not allow for rim shots. Is this true? The module seems to have an indicator that would suggest that the functionality is there. Can someone clarify?

    Thanks.

    • I figured I would post since I got a response to my original issue in the hopes that it may shed some light on the issue for other users since I am seeing the same feedback here that I originally got when I posted.

The information that tech support gave me was that hitting the rim will not produce a rim shot sound as the pad on this unit is single zone. This is despite the indicator on the drum module itself and despite the references to rim shots in the manual. It is a little disconcerting.

I also found it very frustrating that the steps for updating the firmware are dependent upon the user using either a 32-bit version of Windows 7 or Windows XP. The steps simply failed on any 64 bit OS. Most versions of windows that have been sold for the past 4-5 years are 64 bit whether Windows 7 or Windows 10. So it is pretty bad that a simple firmware updater has not been provided in 5-6 years, while the firmware itself has been updated. This issue has been noted for about the same amount of time from what I can see in other posts. Furthermore, tech support does not seem to be very well versed on that issue or that original issue noted above as it took them a week or two to get back to me.

To address the original issue, I thought about getting a dual-zone snare sensor. However, it is not clear as to whether or not the connector for the snare supports dual zones, thus also requiring a different harness. However, I don't see any options for purchasing either a dual zone snare for this unit or an alternative harness that would accept a dual zone signal from a snare.

While I am happy with the kit, the cost, its sound, and performance, I am really disappointed with the support, actually lack thereof that is provided by the company. Given the amount of time that has passed and the number of the same complaints without any resolution. It is a pretty egregious error in judgment on the part of Alesis to provide such confusing and misleading documentation. This is made worse when the same issues come about over and over again over the years and no attempt to resolve them is made.
    • Thank you for the info! This saved me a lot of time :)

  • I just purchased the DM6 and have the same issue. The indicator does not light up when striking the rim.
