Add metronome to the headphones only with the SamplePad 4 and SamplePad Pro

hey, I saw the post about the SamplePad Pro's issues with the metronome coming out the Main Outs as well as the Headphone, my SamplePad 4 seems to have this too, I was wondering if it's the same issue, or it's because it doesn't have that option.

Otherwise, it is still way better than the previous SamplePad.

  • Hi Alesis, and happy new year
i want to buy a new generation device (SP4 ou SPP), but In the same idea as toto Adem (hi!), my prerequisite is to have a separate ouput for the metronome.
It is a real pity for a device so powerful !

  • Hello Adam,

Thanks for the post. We appreciate your feedback! Its not really an "Issue", its more of just a preference for you. However you can't change that right now for the SamplePad Pro. I will send your feedback to my Alesis team.
    • Hi Chris..I don't believe this is just a preference.. it is a widely-used pro feature that should definitely be available on a so-called 'pro' unit. I am desperate to buy a sample pad pro but this feature is a deal breaker for me. I hope Alesis appreciate this applies to many users and implement this as an update asap. Paul.
    • I agree with Adam. To me it was a big disappointment that the metronome can not only be routed to the HeadphoneJack. I think the crowd won't be amused to here the drummer's clicktrack. Even the click can not be "put aside", I mean to make a routing that the click can be panned extremely to right, whereas the rest of the samples is panned to the left jack. Together with a submixer this would have been an alternative, but no way........ :-(
      cheers

  • This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled SamplePad Pro - Click only in phones output.

When I turn on the click in my samplepad Pro it goes out to the phones output but also to the main outputs.
That issue makes the samplepad Pro almost useless to me, as I'd like to hear the click only with my phones and be able to start some loop/samples in time, but obviously I don't want the audience to hear the click track!
Please let me know how to do it

  • This isn't possible with the hardware of the SamplePad 4 and Pro. It would be nice to see this in future versions although it would require some components to come down in price to be viable. I use an mp3 player with a bunch of metronomes in my favourite tempos on and a mixer.

Maybe remove the metronome and simply provide an audio input for the headphone mix on the back? Then you could sell a separate metronome : P. Or wrap this all into the same unit i guess.

  • As you say , simply a toggle option for the aux in to "Main Out / Phones / Both" would work for me. Just a few lines to rewrite in the software probably and it would be done.

I don't think it would be possible to do this with the software. The aux in on the SamplePad Pro is probably mixed using fixed hardware rather than software.

I could be wrong but I feel software controlled digital mixing capabilities (whether using a/d conversion or not) would make the pro far more expensive than it currently is. Maybe in the next model : ).

  • This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Click in ear moniter only.

I don't know how to put the metronome only in my ear and not in the house monitors. It was like that by default. I have tracks that I want to play but I would need a click track.

The thing that makes sound inside the SamplePad 4 doesn't have two audio outs.

It has only has one audio out.

This is sent to two amplifiers, a line level amplifier and a headphone amplifier.

There is no way for this to be fixed in software and would drive up the price of the product if added in hardware.

Give up all hope of this feature in the existing SamplePads!

The only possible way this might happen is if there was a firmware which sent the samples out of the left channel and the metronome out of the right. I have no idea what would be involved in doing that or if its even possible. Also if it is possible it would make the samples play in mono.

  • I agree with Pat. If its possible to run metronome on output and the. Mono out for the main out, its very convenient to have! At lesst the user can chose between stereo operation and metronome on headphones Only!

    Do it Alesis!

Just to be clear, the metronome will be in sync with Midi clock?

  • Hi
Are there any news about that topic?
I was buying sample pad pro but afferma reading this...

    Alesis?

    Thx!
    Alessandro
    • IMO it would be lovely if this happened but its unlikely to happen any time soon.

At the very least it would require a lot of work for the firmware developers and it might even be impossible without a change to the hardware.

The SamplePad 4 is a fantastic product and I'm sure the SamplePad Pro is too.

If you want a metronome and your SamplePad coming out of the same headphones I'd recommend:

Getting an affordable headphone mixer (such as the Alesis Mutimix 6 Cue)
Getting an affordable metronome (such as the BOSS DB30, (i use an mp3 player with some metronome tracks on it)
Getting an extra stereo tls cable.

It shouldn't cost you much more than an extra £100 and a headphone amp is a really useful piece of equipment for a musician or band to own anyway.
    • Good tip, Becky! Thanks! :)

I'd also like to add a possible solution considering the limitations of the Samplepad Pro in its current state. It has 2 outputs L and R. Each sample is stereo. So there are possibilities to create samples that have the sample sound on the left channel and a metronome on the right channel. You would have the left channel going to the PA speakers and plug in your headphones into the right channel (note: you would only have the click in one side of your headphones but its not a big problem). You should also consider a headphone amp to control the volume of the metronome - very cheap.

Make a sample with silence (panned left) and a metronome (panned right). Set the pad to LOOP this. You'd obviously need to create a different tempo sample for each song. For songs where there are tempo changes you can assign different pads to have different tempos. You can then use samples without clicks on the other pads as normal.

Its a pain in the arse to do but it could work! It would be better if Alesis could make an onboard solution.

  • Please, please, please Alesis... I'm begging you. Please develop & release an updated firmware that allows us to pan the metronome L/R. As far as I can imagine, I don't believe there would be any physical limitations causing you to add the pan L/R feature to the metronome.

If there are no physical limitations in also adding a master/phone/both option for the metronome, that would be awesome in addition to the pan L/R option. But I will take 1 out of 2 of those options right now.

This would allow all of us drummers to use the metronome/click feature (via midi clock) in live performances along with sending samples back to the main mix.

Also, please, please, please update the firmware for both the SamplePad Pro & SamplePad 4 products. Some of us need to use the SamplePad 4 due to its small size. Thanks!

  • HI Matt,

I learnt this the hard way, having bought the sampled pro already... The L/R channels bleed all over each other. In other words, if you pan something hard left or hard right, you will hear it quietly in the opposite channel. The way they've made this product in a way that you cannot seperate the channels 100% without crossover. I wasted a lot of time getting to that conclusion. It is a hardware problem. Even if they update the firmware, the channels will bleed over each other.

I had made my own custom samples on logic with the click panned left and the sample panned right. Put the files on the sample pad pro SD card and the metronome was coming out both sides. Tested them on the computer with headphones and the samples worked absolutely with no problems.

  • Nick: When I just read your comments, I was crushed... seeing how I just bought my SamplePad 4 and was very happy with it other than this REALLY important part! However, I decided to test your therory of the L/R channel bleed.

Well, I have good news & bad news. The bad news is that you are correct they do bleed, even if you the pan set to L4 or R4. However, here is the good news. They ONLY bleed out of the Phones jack!!! THEY DO NOT BLEED OUT THE MAIN OUT L / R CHANNELS!!!

I tested this by setting a pad to L4/R4 pan. Yup, I would get the bleed using either L4 or R4 pans when hooked up to the Phones jack. However, then I hooked up a mono cable from the Right MAIN OUT to my mixer and with a setting of L4 pan, there is NO bleed. There was a bleed with pans L1, L2 & L3, but that would be expected by design. The L4 had no bleed. I even tested this by toggling back and forth from L4 to L3 (bleed and no-bleed). THERE IS HOPE!

Bill R.: Thanks for commenting on our thread. Any chance you could push this request up the chains of Alesis and get it done? There are a lot of people here who need this, but please imagine all the others who need it but have not spoke up. Please, do whatever you can, we are all begging you. Thanks!

  • Hi Matt,

That does sound hopeful, well done. I tried it at least on the sample pad pro. I definitely remember trying it on both the main outputs L & R and there was bleed for sure. However I cannot remember whether I tried the headphone output or not. I imagine I would have done at the time also.

If this is the case then a firmware update could help you if the metronome could be panned either left or right on the samplepad 4.

  • This is the most popular topic and request for both SamplePad 4 and SamplePad Pro. Yet, we can get NO confirmation from Alesis if they are even planning on implementing the fix in a firmware. This is very concerning for this first time Alesis buyer. Imagine all the other people that dropped hundreds of dollars on these Alesis products only for the company to not even acknowledge a feature that many users here (and countless others outside of here) really believe should have been part of the product from day one. Spend a little time, fix the problem, release the firmware and get customers for life.

I just posted this question on Alesis Website regarding SamplePad Pro.

My SamplePad 4 doesn't have this feature, and apparently nor does "Pro"...
It's also funny how "Bill R." (Alesis employee) points out to the product page for further developments, when the News page on Alesis website has a last post from January 2014... 3 years ago.

Yep. We sure can rely on such a news/development release/feature frenzy team from Alesis!

Hi, I'm maybe planning to buy the Alesis Samplepad 4. But, I know that it's not possible for know to rout the click only in the headphones (or maybe it's recently be update ?) .
But, in the case I'll create my own click track , it is possible to rout some sample in the headphones and some in the main out ? Or, the mono main out does play bouth left and right mix in mono or just one side ? In that case it could be possible to pan a sample on the right and the click track on the left . Thank for your answer.

You guys... i'm feeling deeply frustrated with the developments on this post.
Either Alesis staff says "it can't" or "it won't" be done, or discussing workarounds is NOT a solution.
I tried to give SamplePad 4 a professional usage. Simply because I don't need an expensive SPDX or DTX Multi with so many pads. Or so i thought... Because it seems that with professional pricing comes professional features.

Why is it ridiculous to even discuss Becky's "solution"?... mainly because - and I'm being sincere, not rude - it's a begginers approach on a so called "solution".

And WHY are the so called "solutions" mentioned above no "solutions" at all?
    - Specific usage of 3rd party material, and consequent purchase;
    - Increased connections and cables;
    - Software edited samples and loops OR creating audio based click-tracks;
    - Permanent assign of one PAD for playing click-track;
Not to mention that it is IMPOSSIBLE to have a loaded complex tempo track, due to the 8MB ROM, plus the time that it would even take to load in between songs (imagine having to wait for the Module to load the click track and having to pause the band for 30 seconds... this may happen, but on a musicians choice NEVER ON A HARDWARE LIMITATION), this would require a dedicated metronome audio track - where a simple metronome app wouldn't do - and again with the software editing...
AND not to mention that using one of the output channels to play the metronome requires that all your output samples are mono, not stereo, and besides the usage of the headphone output will also be limited due to this "workaround"...
AND not to mention that you would have to change banks everytime to need to "call" another metronome track that could not be loaded in the current bank. And again with the waiting time...
...and other reasons but i'm just tired of writing and getting even more frustrated...

...all of this because Alesis refuses to accept that there will ALLWAYS be a need to have metronome on the headphones side, and not allways on the main output side. And we should be able to choose where we want it.

And i'm not even sure we can call this a "professional feature".

i posted a detailed question about samplepad 4 loading times wanting an answer as to whether the long load times were due to the limitations of the device or the speed of the sd card (and would load times increase with a faster memory card)

instead of answering my question it was ignored and, a few day later, deleted. thanks for that.

seems that whoever developed this product did so in a bit of a lazy and ill-informed manner. Samples loading quickly (i can see no reason why they couldn't load almost instantly, there's no lag playing audio from sd cards on any other device including my entry level smartphone) and separating click tracks between headphone and master outs are quite essential for anyone wanting to use this in a performance.

I know it's significantly cheaper than the roland alternative but it is also a decade older than the original spds (which i owned and had no lag switching between patches/kits). I'd expect with the advancements in technology that your R&D team could do a lot better than this. It still costs £180 which is still a decent chunk of change for something that is performing a pretty straight-forward task.

you can delete this comment too if you want.
