Samplepad 4 noise output

I'm having an issue with the output of this device. when connected to an amp the signal has a constant buzzing noise, I'm pretty sure it's electrical interference, like ground noise or somithing related. I have a lot of equipment and I haven't experiece anything like this in my studio, I also have an alesis dm6 which is fine, clean signal. Strangly it does not happen when I connect it via the headphones out. Can you help? Is it worth to return it or all of them will do that? Thank you

  • Hello,

    Thanks for posting.

Are you connected to a surge protector or directly to the wall? Connecting to a surge protector will ensure your signal is properly grounded. What are the specs of the power supply you're using?  If you're located in the US, you should be using a 9V DC 500MmA, 110V power supply. Try using another outlet, as well.

  • Hi, thanks for helping. I am connecting to a surge protector and I did try a different outlet. The signal is properly grounded I have a tester to prove that. The power supply is the one supplied with it from Alesis, I'm in UK. The only thing is that the power supply has a plastic pin for the ground is this how it should be?

  • The strange thing is that the phones out is clean, maybe there's a fault with output internal amp or something. I came across this review so I was wondering if all units do that. But it looks like I'm gonna have to return it :-(

"Two other points to raise (sorry Alesis) are that I had the most incredibly loud mains hum off the unit when it was connected through my studio monitors. I know it wasn''t the power in my studio, so can only assume it was caused by the power supply that comes with it. It was so loud that you may have to consider a hum eliminator if you get one. Yes, THAT loud."

  • I sent it back and received another unit which is pretty much the same, noisy output, this is so bad especially because Alesis don't seem to care/be aware of the issue!

  • The shop where I bought it says all their units are noisy! What's going on??

  • I’m frustrated
All the samplepad 4 have noisy outputs I've concluded, I've tried 3 units INMUSIC BRANDS EUROPE have also confirmed this.

How this product is still on the market is a mystery. Another BIG mystery is how this issue didn't get picked up by Paul White on his SOS review...

  • Same problem here. Just picked one up, main outs are unusable - a constant buzz. headphone output not as noisy.

  • ALESIS!
YOU NEED TO ADDRESS THIS ISSUE NOW! THIS POTENTIALLY WILL PUSH LONG TERM USERS OF ALESIS PRODUCTS ELSE WHERE!

I AM IN THE PROCESS OF GETTING A UNIT CHANGED! IF THE NEXT ONE COMES BACK WITH THE SAME ISSUE I WILL BE GOING TO YAMAHA OR ROLAND!

  • Hi Greg, trust me they are all like that, there is nothing "faulty" about it according to Alesis. I received 3 different ones, all the same.

  • Mine started out great, then, just now, about a couple of weeks out of warranty, it developed the nasty output noise. It is not an electrical issue. Everything is properly grounded and it is powered by the factory supplied power cord.
UNACCEPTABLE ALESIS!! We rely heavily on this unit for adding sampling to our live set and have a gig coming up. NOT HAPPY!!!

  • Hi Everyone,

Thank you for coming forward to report this to us. We are currently investigating this, and I will post back with more information as soon as possible. Noise can be tricky, as there are many potential causes of this type of symptom. In order to gather further information about this issue we will need to know more about how you're using the SamplePad 4:

    * What are you connecting the SamplePad 4 into?
    * What type of cables are used?
    * Were multiple sets of cables used?
    * What else was connected to your SamplePad 4?
    * How were power connections handled?
    * Does the noise occur in multiple rooms?

As another user has reported, the headphone output does not experience this problem. For the time being, we recommend using this output.

  • Hi Bill, thanks for acknowledging this, you'll find that probably this issue won't be that hard to troubleshoot as essentially it's how this unit is designed believe it or not! So if you pick one up and test the outputs for yourself you'll see what we mean.
I copy the email that inmusicbrands the Alesis UK support has sent me a while ago for your reference which identifies the problem to be the noise floor from the internal soundcard:

    Hi Andrea,

Thank you for your email and for the recording provided.

With regards to your previous message and further from our last correspondence, the serial number of the units you previously owned and the numbers of the units which we tested internally, would suggest that the units were from different batches. Given that all of the units we tested, functioned in the exact same way, I have to conclude that this is not batch related.

Without knowing what specific unit Paul White had for review, I could not comment on why this noise was not picked up on. As I’ve previously advised, the noise you have highlighted does appear to be present on all the units we’ve tested (across different batches) and is likely to be routed within the noise-floor of the internal sound card. While I can appreciate how this noise could affect your workflow, our extremely low returns statistics would suggest that this is not the case for everyone who has purchased a SamplePad 4.

This particular case has been forwarded onto our product development team in the USA for their consideration and evaluation. As it stands, the noise you are hearing seems to be native to the product itself. Whether or not any production changes will be made in the future, to overcome this noise, would be a decision that is made in the USA.

  • What are you connecting the SamplePad 4 into - directly into speakers
    * What type of cables are used standard stereo jacks
    * Were multiple sets of cables used - no
    * What else was connected to your SamplePad 4 - nothing but supplied power
    * How were power connections handled - directly into wall
    * Does the noise occur in multiple rooms - yes it happens in all locations but other gear does not produce the noise when plugged in.

  • I am having this same issue following delivery. Looks like this is a manufacturer fault. In 2 minds whether to return it for a refund or accept the flaw and use the headphone work around.

I mean the headphone work around works, but the principle that it shouldn't hiss is a biggy. But when it is significantly cheaper than Roland I am torn!

  • hey guys I'm struggling with this too AND I might! have a solution.
    I'm testing it this week.

The issue might not the gear itself (which is rather cheap for the amount of functionnalities. to keep in mind). it is a standrad issue when creating sound about limiting and compressing. Alesis didn't release any best practices concerning the samples themselves. I realize their sample seam to cap around -5.1 DB which is not standard for an audio file where you try to cap near -0.1 db to have the best possible output level. Might be related to a buffer needed to level the sound depending on the streanght at which you strike the pad.

Also I found out that bringing down the output gain from the samplepad to about half and increasing the amp/console gain remove the noises. (on my brand new model at least)

I think the output is just too powerfull and the gear have some kind of internal saftey (or no internal safty at all... one or the oher) that prevent the sound from caping (or make the sound cap as f$%? but it is not a standard gain issue noise, in my case anyway)

I'm trying to fix my sample to raise the output gain but quick fix is to lower the volume on the pad and raising it on the amp / console you are using.

their samples are stereo too. the converter make mono files. When I try the pad in mono I had better results with my samples. I'll try to make them stereo and see what happen.

let me know if it work. I still have 26 days to return it :D
@alesis: take notes and get rid of your auto-answer robot ;) that's how you fix an issue. by looking for solutions.
