VideoTrack suddently stops recording

Frequently, after starting a VideoTrack recording, I find that it stops automatically after a few minutes. When I then restart it, recording continues normally. The initial section is usually quite short. Typical example: I start recording before the first set. On the first break, I find that the recorder has stopped. I start it again, and the recording continues for the rest of the evening. But sometimes it stops again after a while. Is there any reason that the recorder would stop by itself, other than perhaps a bad switch?

I have exactly the same problem. In exactly the same circumstances. I wanted this to record my band in bars but it cannot be left unattended.

I already seem to have the latest firmware installed. Just to check, I've confirmed that I can zoom while recording. I also attempted to install the latest release, but after copying the "FIRST" file I got the "Incorrect FW" message -- which I presume means that this release was already present. I only see one firmware update on the website.

Me too. I got as far as copying the contents of "first" and now I get the incorrect FW message. The camera seems to work and I can zoom while recording, even though I havent installed the contents of "second" What is happenning?

Friday night's results: First clip stopped by itself after 5:47. Second stopped by itself after 3:06. Third and fourth clips ran correctly until each was stopped manually after about 45 minutes. Fifth clip stopped by itself after 11 minutes. Total recording took up about 2.25Gb of a 16Gb SanDisk Ultra memory card. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. This device isn't much use if it has to be babysat every minute.

As long as a VideoTrack expert seems to be replying here, let me ask an unrelated question. Is there some way to set the device's date/time, so that files will be correctly timestamped? This issue doesn't seem to be addressed in the available docs, and I don't see any relevant setup option.

Mine doesnt seem as bad as spinality2's but it still stops by itself and cannot be trusted to record unattended. I don't think anyone at Alesis is seriously trying to deal with this.

I read somewhere the story of a guy having the same problem and he detected that the problem was in a defective battery. Maybe you can try using a new battery and see if the problem is solved. And please, let us know if it worked ;)

I have only had my Alesis VT a few hours and I haven't done any tests yet. So far it's OK but if I find any issue, I will report it here.

Interesting hypothesis. I'm not sure I'm willing to spend the money on a new rechargeable battery for this device, however. I'll need to see if this would be usable in any other devices I own. At this point, given the doubtful performance to date and limited support suggestions, I am inclined to dump my VT and buy another product from another vendor. But if I change my mind and discover anything I'll post a follow-up.

I remember the guy even bought other two cards but the problem persisted until he replaced the battery.

Now, I'm trying to find out which battery to buy to have a spare just in case.

Just an idea: Have you tried to format the card using the 'Format' option in VT? maybe formatting it in the computer, makes a conflict with VT.

p.s. an offtopic question: Can your VT record just audio? my unit can, but I've read in many reviews that people complains that it can't. Maybe I have an updated model, I don't know. It can also zoom while recording which is a feature in the last firmware update.

Well, I tested VT Saturday and Sunday for a little more than an hour and it didn't stop (thanks God). What I noticed is that after 30 minutes aprox., sync between audio/video failed a little.

Also, the mic gain is a thing of hit and miss as if set too high, it distorts and makes loud hiss noises.

A weird thing is that while I was using VT to watch the recorded video in my TV, all of a sudden -after 10 minutes- VT stopped and freezed. The ON/OFF button didn't respond and had to remove the battery and put it back again to get things back to normal.

About a battery replacement: I've found that the Nokia BL-5C fits well. The voltage is 3.7v as the Alesis battery, but the capacity (mAh) is a little lower. Alesis' is 1050mAh and Nokia's is 1020mAh. I have recorded some short videos with this battery and it works OK. I hope some Alesis representative can give us a light on this and if it is safe to use.

I purchased a Nokia OEM BL-5C for 7 dollars, so it is not expensive at all. Amazon even sells them, but be sure it's the new model with 1020mAh and not the older with 900mAh or 970mAh. Original Nokia batteries cost more.

Now, I will try to find a USB power adapter.

I really hope you and all the other guys find a solution to this problem.

By the way, I've been recording more videos using BL-5C with no problems at all.

hmm..seems like all Alesis VideoTracks are crap..mine stops randomly 3-45 minutes recordnig max..when stops batery still ok (min. 3/4 available) , sd card ok (4gb card inserted, min 3gb still available when stoped).. and support...well, you see.. this is alesis.com forum..where else should one get help? is there any proactive reaction from alesis? i do not see any.. i am returning mine videotrack to seller.. cheers

  sent you (throught support center on yout website) email (using my "real" email address)..no luck receiving any reply..not interested in calling international calls trying to get help,nor asking seller to replace device which is irreplacable, because all pieces have most probably (according to the number of simmilar comments on the internet) same problem..no..will try another email asking for firmware update, will wait another few days, then I am sending the device back to seller to get my money back (as guaranteed by the eshop I bought the device from)..if you Alesis guys have any sollution, please feel free to contact me on the given email address, will be happy to provide some positive feedback after that here..

  Hi, thank you for providing the new firmware download. The firmware update process finished sucessfully (hey, great step forward comparing to the fw version available from official alesis.com). I can confirm that this new firmware adds the possibility to record audio only - really handy, good, big plus (by the way is this the rerason why this firmware is not available from the official source on alesis.com/videotrack? Maybe some management from sales stopping this firmware? If that was the case, you should probably sit down with the "manager", open google.com and enter "alesis videotrack stops recording"..I bet you get the "go" for the firmware in few minutes..if not, you should try to remove the sound only, or do anything just to help this update to make it to the official videotrack site ..otherwise the frustration of videotrack users/owners would cost you much more on loosing potential customers then you ever make by selling it .. I guess ...). Will be testing the firmware as to the functions, quality of recording, bugs etc and if I spot any major problem, will post it here. However for now I am happy to say that the videotrack is recording over 90minutes and still continues (maximum before the fw update was 46minutes!), so maybe, hopefully..fingers crossed...

  ...the audio (recorded as wav audio, or mp4 video) is stereo, 128kbps, 32kHz .. so it has lower quality than expected.. however.. if this is the "must pay" price for making the Videotrack work reliably, than (beeing rational and comparing that to the price it is now sold for) this is acceptable for me (the quality is still much better than any mobile phone,camera etc..).. now I see that making this firmware "official" would mean that you have to say "yes, the device can not handle more than 32kHz"..that is a dilemma..however..I vote for doing that..it is better to admit problem and provide solution - that is what I would do on your place.. I will keep the Viodeotrack. thanks

  I'm not clear if this firmware update was intended for all of us who have the 'unexpected stop' problem. I also find it interesting that, as the original poster, I never received any follow-up or further suggestions, though I'm glad this subthread seemed to get attention from an Alesis rep. For what it's worth, I had totally stopped using my VT because the problem was never resolved and I never heard anything further from Alesis. I guess I'll try this firmware update and see if it helps me as well.

  Well I finally had a chance to install the new firmware. Full of hope, I started the VT recording. However it shut off after 43 minutes with plenty of battery and memory available. So: No change. This unit is useless for me. I'll need to buy a replacement -- a competitor's product, no doubt, since this has been quite disappointing.

  Thanks for the suggestion. I first reported this problem six months ago. I purchased my VT in December of 2010. I'm not sure how long the warranty was; if it was a year, then I first reported this problem on this website within the warranty period.

  You would have needed to contact the number above for return authorizations. I do not deal with warranties myself so you would need to call in for that inquiry. I would assume you have a year depending on your location. Although the firmware update fixes what you are describing.

  I tried another experiment, and this time the unit recorded for three hours, which it hasn't done in a very long time. So it would seem the upgrade fixed something after all. There's a possibility that in the first test the battery wasn't fully charged. So I will do a few more tests before contacting the warranty people, who, after all, probably won't have much to suggest with a unit that (now) is over a year old. Thanks - Trevor

  Last night I recorded for three hours with no glitches! So with luck, this firmware change really has fixed the problem. I am very pleased. By the way, when I last checked, this latest 1.46 firmware was still not available on the main Alesis support download site, which provided only the 1.24 version.

  Uh oh. That sounds ominous. In the past I had noticed sync problems between my VT and other recorders -- apparently due to slightly divergent clocks. (I have been using the VT primarily for video capture, relying on other devices with separate line inputs for audio.) I had to break the media into chunks and resync each block discretely.
  
  I will take a look at the longer recordings I just made, and will report back.
  
  Nevertheless, just being able to get a long video is a big step forward. I should say that I only have one night's success thus far; this device originally worked fine: it made many long recordings over the course of many weeks without exhibiting any problems. So although I am cautiously hopeful, there obviously are complex issues involved.

  Update on sync issue: Nope, no apparent sync issues after 60-90 minutes. Your problem is mysterious; wonder why it would hit your unit and not mine? I assume you're talking about video-vs-audio sync, and not some other sync issue? And you're talking about internal sync, not sync relative to an external simultaneous recording? (I have seen that problem.)

  Thanks for the update! Yes, mine has a video vs. audio sync problem. After 35-45 minutes, audio runs ahead of the video creating an annoying final result.
  
  I'm thinking on installing this new firmware update which will probably fix this issue, but I'm not sure if I already have it or not as I don't know how to look for the fw version currently installed. I will try to update anyway and see what happens...

  OK I upgraded. Hopefully I still have the "audio only" so I'm happy.
  
  During the upgrade process I noticed in the right bottom corner, that it said 1.44 and I assume I had that version installed, as the new is supposed to be version 1.46 right?
  
  I will record a long video and report the results on the video/audio our of sync issue.

  I recorded two videos: the first one was 2 hours long and had no sync problems. The second one was 1.45 hours long and had no sync issues either. So it seems that the firmware upgrade worked! but I will test VT again this next weeked recording live bands, where it failed in the past.

  There's not a way to check firmware through a menu that i know of sorry. Id have to go grab one but i don't think it tells you when you fire it up either. Sounds like your succesfully updated anyhow. You wouldn't have had the version I posted unless you previously updated. Glad its performing better Alfredosis :)

  Thanks J. I want to ask (and for this you will have to grab a VT), is if with this firmware update, the VT can now accept 32GB cards, as 16GB is/was the limit.

  The limit hasn't changed sorry. You may find that it does read but "SD cards up to 16GB" is still the official support statement.

hmm..seems like all Alesis VideoTracks are crap..mine stops randomly 3-45 minutes recordnig max..when stops batery still ok (min. 3/4 available) , sd card ok (4gb card inserted, min 3gb still available when stoped).. and support...well, you see.. this is alesis.com forum..where else should one get help? is there any proactive reaction from alesis? i do not see any.. i am returning mine videotrack to seller.. cheers

  I usually record a rehearsal of 3 hours with no problems ..except....
  the sync is always out ..of that will Work now that I have updated ...this will be the best value for money gadget ever ...i paid £50

  Try again with the new firmware. Im not sure the card type would make the sync change unless it was not supported which does not seem to be your case.

  SDHC is fine. 16GB is the largest supported format as of now so that shouldn't be your issue.

  It stops at "incorrect FW". The problem is that it never fully charges. It shouldn't need a new battery, it's only been used about 10 hours max, it's practically new.
