Vortex 2 MIDI notes hang

I have been playing my new Vortex W2 for the last couple of weeks and I experience note hangs mostly after kbd slaps or scrapes, or fast legato parts. Shutdown does not send panic message, (a good idea for a firmware update) and the only way I've found to silence the hanging notes are to find the specific note(s) and push or play them again to send midi note off message. Sometimes it's a note I hadn't touched. I have been troubleshooting all I can, (and I'm pretty good at it) and all my gear is up to date and pro. The clincher is that last night I met another pro who just got the V2, and we are having the exact same issues. I mean EXACTLY the same, we discussed it thoroughly. I am a longtime Vortex user, I own 2 V1's and it does not happen with them. I am putting hours and hours into setting up the V2 with my samples, and I love the new layout... but. I have tried using it onstage and I always have to put it away and pick up the V1. We need a fix, and fast!!!

  • Hi Chris,

    Thanks for posting.

Let's have you run a test to see if your controller is sending MIDI data properly.

    MIDI-OX - PC - http://www.midiox.com/

In addition to the test below using MIDI-OX, you can also use Send SX (Windows). This program will let you know if and what MIDI information the controller is sending.

**Before you run MIDI-OX connect the MIDI Controller and power on.

    1. Download and install MIDI-OX.
    2. Run the MIDI OX application.
    3. Select the Options menu and select MIDI Devices. Make sure to select MIDI inputs and MIDI Outputs for the MIDI controller, in this case, the USB Audio Device and click OK.
    4. Select the View menu and select Input Monitor. The field type, Data1, contains the CC information. Test the functions of your controller in the monitor.

    MIDI Monitor - Mac OS X - http://www.snoize.com/MIDIMonitor/

What is it MIDI Monitor? MIDI Monitor is a free utility for Mac OS X which displays MIDI signals in a variety of formats. It can watch both incoming and outgoing MIDI streams and can filter them by message type and channel. Musicians will find it handy for tracking down confusing MIDI problems. Programmers can use it to test MIDI drivers and applications. MIDI Monitor is free to download and use.

    1. Download, and Install MIDI Monitor.
    2. Open MIDI Monitor.
    3. Click on the Sources tab to view MIDI devices. Confirm that your USB/MIDI device is listed.
    4. Once you confirm your MIDI device is connected and listed. Play any key(s) on your keyboard/controller to confirm each button or key is sending data to your computer. If your device is working you will see a message with data like below. The device is not sending data you may have a hardware issue.

Try this out and let me know how it goes!

  • Hi; I've had a similar problem with the Vortex 2. I've been able to replicate this by playing a sequence of notes (G3, A3, B3), and when I play a C2, the vortex suddenly adds a very low note. I've gotten a D-2, an A-2, and a E-2 one time. Not sure why it is doing this.

    • You can send a MIDI Panic message with your Vortex 2's pads. These messages can be assigned using the included Editor software, which can be downloaded from the product page
    • Bill, thanks for your response about the Panic message. I've tried that and it works, but it feels like a short-term solution. Do you think there will be any future updates to fix the situation? Or who we should contact regarding this? Seems like it's a problem that is affecting several people and could be fixed via a firmware update or something like it.

    • we need to keep on top of this.. ANYONE having the same problems please comment/post here, Let them know this is happening to you as well.. Unfortunately I have packed my Vortex away, I have exhausted myself trying different ways to get this playing properly, sticking with my roland AX-7 until this gets fixed. That's really good information you provided, that's exactly what is happening to me and hopefully enough information to get them started investigating.
    • Hanging notes when trying to switch midi channels in keyboard zones. I think this is a firmware error because this thing needed to be manufactured too fast without proper testing. The V1 had this problem as well in it's early days.

  • Hi I'm having this same problem with stuck notes, both wireless and through USB.

I'm a very experienced with MIDI gear (20+ years) I never had this problem with the Vortex 1. I also have a 30 year old Yamaha KX-5 that works fine.

While I have been able to assign a panic button, that is for a rare once a year problem. These stuck notes happen every time I use it.

I'm using a MacBook Pro running various VI's in MainStage 3 and do not have this problem with my Arturia 88 note keyboard, Arturia 61 or Yamaha KX-5.

    Hey Bill,

Problem with my Vortex is switching Midi Channels while using the keyboard zones.

Spoke to other Vortex 2 owners and they have the exact same issue.

I really think this is a firmware error because I tried this on at least 10 PC
's, Mac and Windows, and with 5 different DAW's and with 2 copy's of the Vortex Wireless 2 with Dongle and the USB connector.

Please bring a update because its unplayable now on stage.

The keytar is no where else produced anymore, the Roland AX Synth and Korg are pulled from production so you are the market leaders now.

Unless I find a way to switch midi channels via program change there is no chance I can perform with this product and the guitarist will steal the show again ;) haha

    Best regards,

    Jelle Dittmar
    • Thanks for posting.. Hopefully Bill will keep us updated here, I believe he is listening.
    • I also tried a normal 5 pin Midi cable.connecting to an Akai MPK261, same error, and then again on a Scarlett 2i4 same error.
Last but not least I connected it via midi to an Alesis Vi 61, but again, hanging notea while switching channels

This is not a software related thing you guys, I tried two Vortex 2's and both had the same issue.

Or, it is the editor giving wrong information to it, when sending presets I had some errors getting that thing to work.

  • Hi Bill, Please read this, I think this may be important info about what could be going wrong. I did a Factory reset today on my Roland AX-7 and something happened, I started getting the exact same problems I have with the Vortex 'Hang Notes', never ever had that problem with my AX but then again I have never done a factory reset on it. So I carefully go through the settings on the AX, switching setting on/off while playing the keys and eventually come to clt (MIDI Clock on/off), switched to off and the problem had gone. I played till my fingers were sore, hanging notes where gone, switched the midi clock back on and they're back again. Here is a brief description frpm the ax manual

clt (MIDI Clock on/off) This parameter (and the following) allow you to set the tempo and control playback of an external sequencer. With this parameter, you can specify whether (0n) or not (0FF) the AX-7 should transmit the MIDI Clock messages set with the following parameter. Selecting 0ff also means that the AX-7 transmits the MIDI Clock messages received via MIDI IN. This is not the case if you select 0n, because then, the AX-7 transmits its own MIDI Clock signal. Note: The AX-7 is also capable of receiving MIDI Clock mes- sages and of retransmitting them

Let me know Bill if you find this information useful and what your thoughts are .. Thanks

    Still happening via Wireless.

    Problem went away.

This is the first time using wireless ever, using the included batteries (which had been shrink-wrapped until a moment ago).

For the record, Finale has these settings under MIDI Setup

    Receive MIDI Sync From: None
Send MIDI Sync To: None (also it's unchecked)
Send MTC To: None (also it's unchecked)

    Under Logic MIDI

    MIDI Clock

Transmit to: Destination 1 Off (also it's unchecked)
Transmit to: Destination 2 Off (also it's unchecked)

    MIDI Time Code (MTC)
Transmit MTC: All (greyed out because this is unchecked)

    MIDI Machine Control (MMC)
    Transmit MMC (unchecked)
    Listen to MMC Input (unchecked)

Wondering if Christopher is on to something. My software seems to be configured to ignore MIDI Clock. I wonder if that is a viable option for folks having problems (i.e. set whatever you're using with your Vortex to ignore the clock).

    Good luck, everyone!

    Peace

  • Hi guys.

    Studio One user here.

Just got a B-stock V2 and had hanging notes like every 30 seconds especially when I do pitch bend or play fast. The V2 went crazy and not responding for the upcoming notes until like 10 seconds it resets. And the circle goes around. I don't think it's the issue of a B-stock. But I'm pretty sure people returned it because of this bug.

Besides, I would like to know how far you guys can do without any latency and messed up midi. I'm getting these 2-3 metres away from the usb. It's pretty limited and I don't think I can move around much on the stage with this range. Just wanna know if this is normal. If so I think I'm getting a MIDIjet PRO even the hanging bug is fixed :(

  • I just bought Vortex and also have a big problem with hanging notes. I have updated it to the latest firmware from Alesis website, but it didn't help. It looks like it has something to do with aftertouch, at least on my unit. I can replicate it easily on USB or Wireless connection. This is the procedure:

    - first you have to "confuse" the controller with some fast playing (or for testing purposes just randomly pressing multiple keys) while also engaging aftertouch
    - on my unit, some note will hang in a matter of seconds; when this happens, Vortex will by itself transmit some random note in the OCTAVE-2 range.

Now the Vortex is in some weird state, where you can "hang" a note simply by:
    - pressing any key hard enough, so the aftertouch engages
    - while engaging aftertouch on that first note just press any other key
    - second key will get stuck (and that low note will also be transmitted)

MIDI monitor shows, that Vortex does not transit note off for the second key, but instead transmits two note offs for the first key (and sometimes also two for that low key that it transmitted by itself).

Check out the picture (I have filtered out the aftertouch-channel pressure messages). I can send the full export from MIDI Monitor, if it helps.

UPDATE: I also get hang notes when using ribbon and tilting it (even if TILT button is turned off - looks like sensor itself is interfering), but in this case there is no random low note like with aftertouch/channel pressure. I really hope this can be resolved, because it makes otherwise cool controller too annoying to use and way too unstable for live performance.

  • Hi Guys,

I seem to see a consistent repeatable problem when using a USB Hub. I have a 2012 MacBook Pro Quad Core i7 2.3 Ghz. It only has two USB ports so sometimes I would use a small 4 port unpowered USB Hub.

I found that using a USB hub on my machine caused hung notes almost 100% of the time and the the wireless range seems affected. (Even if the Alesis USB dongle is the only thing on the Hub) Eliminating the Hub and connecting the Alesis Vortex directly to my USB port seems to help.

I don't know if this is related to the older 2012 MacBook Pros having under powered USB ports or what but I definitely see a pattern here and wonder if the Alesis Vortex USB Dongle is part of the issue... Is it drawing too much power, from the USB Port or not enough?

By connecting the VORTEX WIRELESS 2 in all modes (USB cable, wireless or MIDI OUT) the notes remain locked at random. I tried with Logic Pro X on macOS High Sierra and SampleTank on iPad with iRig Pro.

It's incredible that a KEYBOARD has this bug and a firmware update has not yet been released. It's like an airplane that can not fly!!!

  • Yep. I still have this useless $300 plastic toy sitting around for over a month now waiting for something from the manufacturer so it will work as promised. Can't trust it to play live. (Even with a pad set to panic it's too risky to have hung notes flying out there.)

Never had this kind of experience with a major product defect basically ignored.. What is it about the whole Keytar thing? Every model has some element of suckage.

I own 7 other keyboards and controllers and they all work perfectly. But shape them like a guitar and they suck.

    • Hi, my Vortex wireless 2 also has the "hanging midi notes" problem. Even after the 1.1.2 firmware update.
I tested it with multiple plugins, audio interfaces and computers. It is most certainly the keytar that causes the problem. All my other midi devices (including the Vortex Wireless 1) do not have this problem.
It occurs most with glissandos, but also when multiple keys are pressed simultaneously

      Hoping for a swift fix,

      Koen

  • Hi Guys, I've definitely experienced some terrible stuck notes problems, but recently I've been successfully using mine playing single note violin and cello parts.

I'm using it wirelessly within 5' of my computer, to trigger sounds in MainStage. Tilt sensor off, dongle plugged directly into my MacBook Pro's usb port. Using any kind of USB hug immediately causes hung notes.(Which shouldn't be an issue)

Right now I'm on the original firmware. I'm going to try playing chords and see happens and will also be updating to the new firmware.

So in my experience; Don't use any kind of USB hub, have title sensor off. Come to think of it, I think I probably have pressure turned off.

Let me know if these three things help anyone and I'll see what happens if I play some parts with chords rather than single note lines.

  • I have not noticed big improvements with firmware 1.1.2. The problem persists.

Obviously it occurs more frequently playing fast. The activation of the tilt sensor adds more data to the transmission increasing the probability of generating the problem. If you do a glissato on all octaves, the problem occurs very frequently.

I tried my test connecting the Alesis Vortex 2 in the following ways:
    1. Directly to the USB of my MacBookPro (11.5), without extensions, with Logic Pro X
    2. With the Alesis wireless receiver, connected directly to the USB of my MacBookPro, with Logic Pro X
    3. With Midi out connect to iRig Pro on iPad Air and SampleTank

    PS: i'm a developer ;)
